Wilmot takes UK Records at Barrow

Halstead Road Runners Marathon running legend Andy Wilmot, 70, successfully completed the Great Barrow ‘10 Marathons in 10 days’ Challenge finishing on Saturday. In doing so he becomes a UK record holder. Not only is Wilmot now one of a group of only 15 runners in the UK to have completed the 10 off road marathons on consecutive days, he is also the eldest of this elite group of athletes.

Starting last Thursday at Barrow near Bury St Edmunds, Wilmot has clocked up a total of 262+ miles during the 10 day challenge, with an accumulate time of 46 hours 55 minutes and an average time of 4 hours 41 mins per marathon.

Running in support of Wilmot, Rosie Atkins and Dan Smith completed their own marathon milestones, running 2 marathons in 2 days on days 4 and 5 of the challenge. Rosie Atkins achieving a PB on the first of her 2 marathons with a time of 5:08:57 knocking 44 minutes off of her previous best time. Club chairman Keith Thorogood and Kate Allen also made the short journey to Barrow completing the 26.2 mile course.

Away from the marathon distance Stewart Ellis ran the Great Shelford 5k race near Cambridge on Sunday. Ellis clocking a hugely impressive time of 17:39 which placed him 6th overall out of a field of 400 + runners.

Club captain Kathryn Bronson completed the popular park run series on Saturday finishing the 5k course in 21:36.

To round off a very busy week for Halstead Road Runners, Andy Owens, Jon Buist and Hazel Buist all ran the Dedham 10k. Jon Buist 42:58, Andy Owens 43:27 and no official result available for Hazel.
