The weekend started at the Felixstowe Friday 5 at Kirton. Wes Atkins and Stewart Ellis both ran fantastic pbs on the multi-terrain course breaking the 30 minute barrier. The main local race this weekend was the Braintree 5 which returned to its new venue of Chelmsford City Racecourse for the second year. Stuart Ashworth led the Road Runners home in a new PB of 36:11. It was the 24th running of the Halstead and Essex Marathon on Sunday organised by Halstead Road Runners. The event also serves as the Essex Marathon Championships so is always popular even with runners who have competed in the London Marathon only weeks previous. The weather is usually notoriously hot. Gavin Allen and Pete Robinson competed in the High Easter 10k road race today. In warm conditions and in a field of over 400 runners, the boys represented Halstead well with Robinson finishing in 4th position in a time of 35:03 followed closely by Allen in 5th position in 35:06. The weather did a complete about turn from last weekend’s hot London Marathon, with very cold and windy conditions. Caroliena Cameron and Jo Roulson took on the Frinton and Walton Half Marathon. Caroliena finished in 1:45:26 with Jo knocking 4 minutes off her previous personal best in 1:55:29.
As predicted the sun shone on the runners taking part in the London Marathon making it the hottest London Marathon on record. Whilst the weather made for great conditions for spectators, it was brutal out on the course for those who have been training hard through the cold winter months.
