Bumper Weekend of Running

It’s been a bumper weekend of running with some fantastic personal bests and feats of endurance.

On Saturday it was the Essex Cross Country Relay Championships with Halstead fielding a Ladies and a Mixed Team. The event took place at Stubbers Adventure Centre in Upminster in typical cross country weather conditions. The Ladies team consisted of Caroliena Cameron, Melanie Candler and Rachael Roughan. The Mixed team saw some new faces to cross country running – Axel Voigt, Debbie Partridge, Val Kerrison and Ivan Filchev making his debut for the club. All the runners put in a fantastic effort each covering just under 5k. The Ladies finished 12th out of 43 teams. The mixed team results are not yet available.

After Saturday’s damp and gloomy weather Sunday saw perfect running conditions. York Marathon was the race of choice for first timers Jon Greenley, Tom Porter and Leigh-Anne Porter. They were joined by Heidi Hibbett and Andy Owen. Tom, who was recently successful in the London Marathon ballot, was first back for the club in an impressive 3:11. Owen followed in 3:25 with Greenley in 3:43. For the ladies Heidi knocked 24 minutes off her personal best crossing the line in 4:04 with Leigh-Anne only a minute behind in 4:05.

Dan Smith, in the final stretch of his road to 100 marathons, took on the Great Barrow Autumn Double this weekend with club mate Andy Wilmot. Day 1 Wilmot finished in 4:26 with Smith in 5:10. Day 2 Wilmot showed incredible consistency finishing in 4:26 again with literally 1 second difference between the 2 days. Smith finished in 4:49 taking him to 98 marathons.

Also racing over 2 days was Dan Cole who completed the mentally and physically tough Saltmarsh 75. He covered 39.3 miles on Day 1 in 8:07 and if that wasn’t enough he then got up the next day to cover a further 37.7 miles in 8:57 on day 2. His total was 77 miles in 17:04.

At the Tiptree 10 Richard Tiller was the first finisher for the Road Runners in 1:21 with Treena Harrington in 1:33.

John Warne headed to the coast for the Bournemouth Half Marathon running with various family members with four of them finishing together in 2:14.
