FRIENDSHIP AND FORTITUDE See Local Runners Through 100-Mile Desert Challenge.
In a story that celebrates the power of friendship and perseverance, local runners Matt Biggin and Nathan Roulson achieved an extraordinary feat in October, completing the iconic Javelina Jundred ultramarathon in the Arizona desert.
The event, which sees around 1,500 runners take on gruelling distances under the vast desert sky, is renowned for its unique, festive atmosphere. With Halloween-themed aid stations, pumping music, and a spirit of collective encouragement, it brings together elite athletes and determined amateurs alike, all united by a shared goal.
For Matt and Nathan, reaching the start line was the culmination of a year of dedicated preparation, involving meticulous logistics and specialised training to confront the anticipated desert heat. The journey was a testament to their commitment, requiring consistent perseverance to be ready for one of running’s toughest tests.
The pair started strong, buoyed by the electric energy and stunning scenery of McDowell Mountain Regional Park. However, the immense challenge of a 100-mile race soon made itself known.
During the fourth lap of the five-loop course, Nathan hit a formidable wall. A severe physical struggle left him drained, and the six-mile journey back to the main aid station felt endless. After a brief rest, his chances of continuing seemed slim.
“At that point, I put my odds of finishing at less than 10%,” Nathan recalled.
It was here that the true spirit of their partnership shone. Matt, who was feeling strong, made a pivotal decision. He vowed that they would cross the finish line as a team, or not at all.
With Matt’s unwavering support and steady encouragement, Nathan found a way to keep moving. Slowly, shuffling step by step, they progressed. As a new day dawned, painting the desert in brilliant colour, they conquered the long, rocky climb to the Jackass Junction aid station – a turning point where Nathan felt a renewed glimmer of hope.
“With the sun up again, we iced-up and managed to run most of the last ten miles,” said Matt. “We were cheering on others as we passed, sharing in the collective effort.”
After 27 hours and 52 minutes on the trail, they crossed the finish line together, an emotional culmination of their year-long journey.
“The atmosphere at the finish was incredible,” Nathan said. “It’s been an unbelievable journey. It’s the challenges, the ups and downs, that make achievements like this so meaningful.”
Official results show they finished in 27 hours and 52 minutes, placing 359th and 360th overall from 775 starters. But the real story was written on the trail: two friends, one tough day, and a promise kept.
