It was a double header cross country weekend for the Halstead Road Runners which kicked off with a trip to Epping Forest. The course was extremely muddy in places. The ladies had their best result in the league this season finishing 2nd on the day with Rachael Roughan (22) heading up the scorers followed by Wendy Carter (58), Anna Bambridge (63) and Sandi Robinson-Miller (72). Nicole Smith finished in 85th position with Lauren Hutley putting in a super sprint finish in 96th. The ladies sit in 3rd position in the table on equal points with JBR Run & Tri so have everything to play for going into the final fixture at Basildon next month.
The men have had a fantastic season in this league. They have consistently finished in either 1st or 2nd position at every fixture and Epping was no exception with them claiming the top spot. This leaves them unreachable at the top of Division 2 guaranteed promotion with one fixture still to go. James Smith (37) and Wes Atkins (44) lead the men’s team home with Tom Porter (104), Bob Langley (119), Don English (136) and Paul Hinsley (143) taking the remaining scoring spots. It’s not just about the scorers though as everyone counts with Andy Carter (185) and Darren Powell (195) both putting in great runs in the hard going conditions.
On Sunday attention moved to the NESS League at Ipswich. The Juniors were straight into an up hill start. Lily-May Hollinshead made a fearless debut finishing in 26th position in the girls U11 category. Also racing in that age group was Martha May who continued her good form finishing in 8th. Josh Roughan representing the boys finished 20th in the U11 category.
In the senior race a number of the Road Runners were obviously racing on consecutive days on tired legs. Despite this the lead scorers for both the men and ladies were largely unchanged. Whilst conditions were dry underfoot there was a strong head wind on the open course in view of the impressive Orwell Bridge.
The men’s team were James Smith (18), Wes Atkins (21), Dan Hollinshead (81), Steve May (85), Bob Langley (111), Sam Wolton (127), Andy Carter (168), Phil Jeffries (176), Simon King (193), Dan Roughan (207) and Adrian Gasser (219). The men were 3rd in Pool B on the day and are 3rd in the League.
The ladies’ team were Rachael Roughan (11), Anna Bambridge (54), Wendy Carter (62), Hazel Buist (71) Val Kerrison (82), Nicole Smith (83) and Lauren Hutley (95). The ladies were also 3rd in Pool B on the day and 3rd in the League behind joint leaders Tiptree and Hadleigh Hares.
