Triathlons are not for the faint hearted and always up for a challenge, HRR’s Neil Addington took on Outlaw Nottingham on Sunday, an award-winning long-distance triathlon event. Neil has completed the event on three previous occasions but this time took it on at very short notice.

The first stage, a 2.4 mile swim took place in the Regatta Lake at the National Water Sports Centre, with a mass start at 6am. Neil was pleased with his swim completing it in 1:38.

Neil had a smooth transition and then took on the next stage which was 112 miles bike ride. The partially closed bike course is flat and fast, with only one notable climb at mile 50. Neil had a good first 25 miles, with a slight tailwind behind him. The rest of the ride was tough with a strong headwind. Feeling the urge to quit at 75 miles he talked himself round and continued on to finish in 8:02.

The third and final stage was a multi-lap run course of 26.2 miles. Unfortunately by this point Neil was struggling with fuelling and had nothing left to give. He had to DNF but not before managing to run a half marathon distance.

Neil was happy with what he achieved on very short notice – an attempt is not a failure and it has only made him more determined to try next year. A 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride and ending with a half marathon is very impressive indeed. Not many would take that on! A massive well done to Neil and some great action shots.
