The Essex Veterans Cross Country Champs took place in Epping Forest close to Chingford. There were three races, all using the same two lap course which measured 4.9 miles. Halstead Road Runners had three men in the over 50’s race and three women in the over 40’s race but no representatives in the men’s over 40’s race. In cold, sunny weather each lap had plenty of mud with a few climbs and descents thrown in to make a really challenging event. Bob Langley crossed the line 72nd out of 122 finishers in 39 minutes 38 seconds and won a Silver medal in the V70 age category. Andy Carter had a strong run, finishing 99th in 43:36 and 9th V65. Anton Nieuwoudt was making good progress through the field after a steady start when he had to stop briefly after turning his ankle. He completed the course in 104th position with a time of 44:38 placing 23rd V60. In the women’s race Wendy Carter led the way for HRR with an excellent 70th position in 46:32 out of 122 finishers and 8th in her V60 age category. Lorraine Garnham enjoyed her run, finishing 91st in 48:48 and 2nd V65. Emily Bentley continues to hone her skills at cross country running as she ran really well to finish 97th in 51:21 and 25th V45. All in all, some great performances at a traditional cross country venue building strength and endurance for the Spring road races to come.
