HRR had 9 runners in action at the fourth and final race of the Essex Cross Country League on Saturday at Hainault Forest Country Park. After recent dry weather the course was not as difficult as last year’s mudfest but nevertheless quite challenging with some serious hills to negotiate. The senior women’s race distance was 3.75 miles and Wendy Carter once again led the yellow vests home with a great run, 71st out of 115 finishers. Charlotte King was next in 88th, followed by Treena Carder 96th, Lorraine Garnham 100th and Lauren Ripton 109th. The men’s race was held over the longer distance of 5.25 miles and Wes Atkins put in another fine performance, finishing in 54th position out of 187 finishers. Against many of the best athletes in Essex, Wes placed 23rd overall for the season in the under 40 age category. Gav Ripton finished in 124th, Darren Powell 155th and Andy Carter 171st which was good enough to finish the season with a 2nd place finish in the over 65 age category.
